LATEST DEVELOPMENT

📽️ Google Brings Video Overviews to NotebookLM for Visual Learning

Google is expanding NotebookLM, its AI-powered research and note-taking assistant, with a new feature called Video Overviews — turning dense documents like PDFs, notes, and images into digestible visual explainers.

Think of it as a visual version of the AI-generated Audio Overviews introduced earlier this year. Instead of just listening, users can now watch a presentation that pulls in relevant visuals, diagrams, quotes, and stats to explain key concepts.

🎯 Users can personalize the overview by:

  • Setting learning goals

  • Defining the audience

  • Choosing which topics to focus on

  • Asking for beginner-friendly or expert-level summaries

Also rolling out: a redesigned Studio panel, where users can now quickly generate Audio Overviews, Video Overviews, Mind Maps, and Reports — all from one place. Plus, multitasking is now supported, so you can listen to a summary while exploring a Mind Map or reviewing notes.

📌 Bottom line: With Video Overviews, NotebookLM is becoming a powerful multimodal learning assistant, helping users understand complex topics through whichever format works best — audio, visual, or interactive.

📚 OpenAI Launches Study Mode in ChatGPT to Boost Student Learning

OpenAI has introduced Study Mode, a new feature in ChatGPT designed to support critical thinking and discourage passive answer-seeking. Rather than just giving solutions, ChatGPT will now ask follow-up questions, test user understanding, and sometimes refuse to provide direct answers unless students engage with the content.

Rolling out now to users on Free, Plus, Pro, and Team plans, the feature will reach Edu accounts — often used by schools — in the coming weeks.

🎯 Why it matters:
With millions of students using ChatGPT, Study Mode is OpenAI’s first major step to position ChatGPT as a learning companion, not just a homework shortcut. It follows a wave of concern from educators about generative AI weakening students’ thinking skills.

However, Study Mode isn’t locked in — students can easily switch back to regular mode. No admin or parental controls exist (yet), so the effectiveness relies on student choice and motivation.

Still, it’s a signal that OpenAI is taking education more seriously — and building for long-term learning, not just quick answers.

👓 Zuckerberg: “AI Glasses Will Be the Future — Without Them, You’ll Be at a Disadvantage”

During Meta’s Q2 earnings call, CEO Mark Zuckerberg doubled down on his belief that AI-powered glasses will become the primary way we interact with AI — and those without them could fall behind.

“I think in the future, if you don’t have glasses that have AI — or some way to interact with AI — you’ll be at a pretty significant cognitive disadvantage,” Zuckerberg said.

Meta has been heavily investing in smart eyewear, from its Ray-Ban Meta glasses, which saw sales triple year-over-year, to its upcoming Orion AR glasses, which promise holographic displays and AI integration.

Despite Reality Labs posting a $4.53B loss in Q2 (and nearly $70B since 2020), Zuckerberg insists the division is a long-term bet on the future of consumer AI and the Metaverse.

Why it matters:
While AI glasses seem logical — blending physical and digital worlds seamlessly — the future of AI devices remains wide open. OpenAI’s $6.5B acquisition of Jony Ive’s startup hints at other form factors (like AI pins or pendants) that could disrupt the space.

For now, though, Zuckerberg is all-in:

“Glasses are going to be the ideal way to blend the physical and digital worlds — and AI will accelerate that.”
